VCU takes third place in 2025 Marquette Challenge
VCU’s Department of Physical Therapy delivered another standout performance in the 2025 Marquette Challenge, placing third nationally among participating programs. Led by student organizers and supported by faculty and alumni, PT students raised critical funds for the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research, the only national nonprofit solely dedicated to advancing physical therapy research.
Through a yearlong slate of initiatives – including merchandise sales, bake sales and a long-running annual spring golf tournament – students contributed their time and creativity to support evidence-based practice and early-career researchers. Their efforts reflect the department’s commitment to service, scholarship and shaping the future of the profession.

VCU’s strong showing in last year’s Marquette Challenge follows seven consecutive years of earning first or second place, including a five-year streak in the top spot. Its continued run of successful fundraising highlights how student engagement extends beyond the classroom, helping advance research that benefits clinicians, patients and communities nationwide.
DPT student Andrea Schleeper served as co-coordinator of the 2025 Marquette Challenge alongside recent graduate Julia Betancourt, DPT. “I was very impressed by VCU’s track record with the Marquette Challenge, and I wanted to take up the opportunity to fundraise for PT research,” Schleeper said. “Our fundraising helps further the profession as a whole and keep everything evidence-based as physical therapy moves forward.”
Schleeper currently serves as the coordinator for the Class of 2027, while DPT student Noah Stewart is the coordinator for the Class of 2028.
