Looking to the future of physical therapy

As another academic year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the path our students take to reach graduation and the shared commitment our students, faculty, clinical partners and alumni make to drive our program forward.

In May, we proudly celebrated the Class of 2026. Commencement always provides an opportunity to honor the hard work, perseverance and growth of our students. However, for many, the celebration started earlier as 100% of the soon-to-be graduates who sat for the April National Physical Therapy Examination passed on their first attempt. This continued record of success reflects the dedication of our students and the outstanding preparation provided by our faculty and clinical partners. As the graduates enter the workforce, we’re excited to see the impact they will have on patients, communities and the future of our profession.

Our students also continue to demonstrate that leadership in physical therapy extends well beyond the classroom and clinic. This issue highlights Brian Pham and Ally Clark, whose advocacy efforts helped inform proposed amendments to Virginia legislation focused on improving health care access. Their willingness to engage in the policymaking process reflects the type of leadership and service we strive to cultivate in every VCU physical therapist. In addition to reading the story, I invite you to hear directly from Brian, Ally, and the faculty supporting them in this recent podcast from the American Physical Therapy Association, whose leaders were impressed by their outreach.

The strength of our department is also reflected in our research successes with faculty obtaining new funding for their work and sharing results through presentations and publications. In addition, our faculty have a long history of contributing to the science of educating physical therapy students. We are proud these efforts are culminating in a formalized Community of Practice that will continue to serve as an incubator for instructional quality and educational research within VCU’s Department of Physical Therapy.

All told, our faculty continue to advance rehabilitation science through innovative collaborations, competitive funding and discoveries that have the potential to improve patient outcomes, transform clinical practice and elevate the academic preparation of future PT professionals. Their work not only expands knowledge in the field but also creates meaningful opportunities for students to engage in research and scholarly activity.

Whether presenting research, advancing innovation or representing VCU at professional meetings across the country, our faculty, students and alumni continue to elevate the profession and strengthen our reputation as one of the nation's leading physical therapy programs. We are proud to remain the No. 1 physical therapy program in Virginia and among an elite tier of programs nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Thank you for your continued support of VCU Physical Therapy. Together, we’re preparing the next generation of leaders, advancing the profession and creating lasting impact for the patients and communities we serve.
